Indian state Assam battling floods braces for heavy rain

The flood-stricken Indian state of Assam is on high alert as it prepares for more rainfall in the coming days. Assam, located in the northeastern part of India, has been submerged in floodwaters for several days. This natural disaster has affected over 600,000 people and claimed at least 34 lives.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed concerns that the next few days could be 'critical,' with India's weather department forecasting additional rainfall in some districts.
Every monsoon season, Assam faces widespread destruction due to flooding in its extensive network of rivers. In 2022, floods displaced more than four million people and resulted in at least 45 fatalities.
The recent floods have left behind significant devastation in Assam and parts of neighboring Bangladesh, submerging villages, destroying crops, and wrecking homes.
On Monday, the Assam Disaster Management Authority reported that all rivers flowing through the state had surpassed the danger level at multiple locations, with at least 19 of the state's 35 districts affected by the floods.
That same day, Chief Minister Sarma noted that Assam was experiencing a 'second wave of flooding' due to heavy rainfall in the neighboring state of Arunachal Pradesh and several districts within Assam.
He added that the situation could remain critical for the next three to four days, depending on the rainfall.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured Assam of the federal government's support in case of a crisis.
The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted very heavy rainfall in Assam and the neighboring state of Meghalaya until Friday.
