India concerned about ongoing violence in Myanmar

India's foreign minister S. Jaishankar said he voiced concern about the impact of continuing violence in Myanmar in a meeting on Wednesday with his counterpart from the Southeast Asian nation.

Myanmar has been in a state of unrest since a military coup in 2021 overthrew its elected government, igniting a protest movement that has escalated into a full-scale civil war. The military now struggles to maintain control over significant areas of the country.
Despite the expanding armed resistance against Myanmar's military, India has continued to engage with the ruling junta. India also has an infrastructure project in Myanmar's western Rakhine state, an area that has seen intense conflict recently.
During his meeting with Myanmar's Foreign Minister Than Swe, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of safeguarding India's ongoing projects in Myanmar.
'We discussed our profound concern over the impact of the persistent violence and instability in Myanmar on our border. India is open to engaging with all stakeholders to address this situation,' Jaishankar posted on X.
He also advocated for a swift return to democratic governance in Myanmar, following a recent meeting between the Indian ambassador to Myanmar and the head of the junta's election commission.
Jaishankar said, I urged credible security measures for our ongoing projects in the country and called for an early return to democratic transition in Myanmar. India is ready to assist in any way possible.
