Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi to be next Indian Army chief
The Indian government has appointed Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi as the next Chief of Army Staff.
Lt Gen Dwivedi, who is currently serving as the Vice Chief of Army Staff, will take over from General Manoj Pande on June 30. General Pande is set to retire on the same day after an extended tenure, which was prolonged by one month due to the Lok Sabha elections.
Lt Gen Dwivedi, the senior-most official after Gen Pande, shares a longstanding camaraderie with Lt Gen Singh, as both are course mates.
Born on July 1, 1964, Lt Gen Dwivedi was commissioned into the Infantry (Jammu & Kashmir Rifles) of the Indian Army on December 15, 1984. His military career, spanning nearly four decades, includes numerous distinguished command, staff, instructional, and foreign appointments. Among his notable command roles, he has led the 18 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles Regiment, the 26 Sector Assam Rifles Brigade, served as Deputy Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East), and commanded the 9 Corps.
As a lieutenant general, he has held key positions such as Director General Infantry and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command from 2022 to 2024 before his appointment as the Vice Chief of Army Staff.
