India's opposition alliance makes a stunning comeback

The results of India's general election, announced on Tuesday, have led to some unexpected reactions. While the winners alliance appear subdued, the runners-up are celebrating.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, secured a historic third term with 293 seats in the 543-member parliament. Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not independently achieve the crucial 272 seats required to form the government, casting him in a somewhat diminished light.
This outcome is being hailed as a significant resurgence for the opposition 'INDIA' alliance and Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi.
The election results, disclosed on Wednesday, signal a revival for the Congress party and its allies. Defying predictions of decline, they made significant gains in areas previously dominated by the ruling party, reshaping India's political landscape. The opposition secured a total of 232 seats, doubling their count from the previous election.
Political analyst Rashid Kidwai described the results as "an extraordinary story," noting the surprising nature of the opposition's performance and their unexpected success.
The Congress party, elated by the results, termed it 'a moral and political defeat for Mr. Modi,' whose campaign largely centered around his leadership and record. On Tuesday evening, Rahul Gandhi addressed the media, stating, 'the country has unanimously sent a message to Mr. Modi and Amit Shah that we do not want you.'
