Narendra Modi claims he has been chosen by God
As the Indian election process approaches its conclusion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared that he believes he has been chosen by God for a specific purpose.
'I am convinced that 'Parmatma' (God) sent me for a purpose. Once that purpose is fulfilled, my work will be done. This is why I have completely dedicated myself to God,' Modi told NDTV news channel on Sunday.
Modi, who is seeking a third term with the election results to be announced on June 4, stated that while God has guided much of his work, the larger divine plan remains undisclosed.
Within his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Modi has developed a strong cult of personality, with many supporters struggling to name other cabinet members or local BJP candidates.
The BJP has consistently promoted Hinduism, the majority faith, throughout public life. Notably, during the inauguration of the temple in Ayodhya in January, Modi took a central role in the rituals, typically reserved for Hindu priests.
Despite his long tenure, Prime Minister Modi has rarely given interviews or held press conferences. This marks one of the few times he has openly discussed his role as a divine instrument.
