India resumes e-visa services for Canadians after two month pause
India has resumed its electronic visa services for Canadian nationals following a nearly two-month hiatus, according to sources reported by NDTV on Wednesday.
Visa services for Canadians had been halted since September 21 amidst an ongoing diplomatic dispute triggered by Canada's assertions. They claimed that individuals linked to the Indian government were involved in the June killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who held Canadian citizenship.
This resumption means that all visa services, including tourist visas, have been reinstated. Earlier, services for four types of visas, including business and medical visas, had recommenced last month.
In September, India had suspended the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens 'until further notice.' This move came following a series of diplomatic clashes between the two nations, involving the expulsion of a senior diplomat from each country. Additionally, India mandated "parity" in the number of senior officials assigned to missions in both countries.
The bilateral relations between India and Canada deteriorated notably after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made significant claims. He stated that his government possessed 'credible allegations' linking Indian government 'agents' to the killing of Nijjar.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, aged 45, was fatally shot in June outside a gurudwara in Vancouver, Canada. The Indian government had officially designated Nijjar as a terrorist back in 2020.
