14 dead, hundred missing after Indian glacial lake bursts bank in heavy rain
Northeast India faced a catastrophe as torrential rains led to the overflow of a glacial lake, resulting in the loss of 14 lives, with hundred individuals missing, including 22 army personnel.
This calamity, which has profoundly impacted the lives of 22,000 people, is part of a growing trend of severe weather incidents in the South Asian mountainous regions, largely attributed to the effects of climate change.
The rescue and search operations are being conducted in extremely challenging conditions, characterized by relentless downpours and swiftly flowing water in the Teesta River. Additionally, numerous roads and bridges have been washed away in several areas, exacerbating the rescue efforts, as conveyed by a defense spokesperson through the X social media platform (formerly Twitter).
According to reports from the state disaster management agency, 26 individuals sustained injuries in the wake of this calamity, and the tally of missing persons stood at 102 as of early Thursday. Furthermore, eleven bridges have been swept away by the surging waters, compounding the challenges faced by rescue teams.
The meteorological department has issued warnings of impending landslides and potential disruptions to air travel, as the forecast anticipates additional rainfall in parts of Sikkim and neighboring states over the next two days.
