Lt Gen Pande Appointed New Indian Army Chief

Indian Army Vice Chief Lt Gen Manoj Pande has been appointed as the next army chief. He will be the 29th Indian Army chief and the first engineer to hold the top military post.

Manoj Pande will succeed current army chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane_ who's scheduled to complete his 28 month- tenure on April 30. Lt Gen Pande will assume office on May 1.

'Government has decided to appoint Lt Gen Manoj Pande as the next chief of army staff_' the Indian Defence officials told news agency.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy_ Lt Gen Pande was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers in December 1982.

In his 39 years of military service_ Pande has held important and challenging command and staff appointments in different operational environments which include command of an engineers brigade in the western theatre_ as part of a strike corps_ an infantry brigade along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir_ a mountain division in the high altitude area of western Ladakh and command of a corps

Operation Parakram_ the large-scale mobilisation of troops and weapons to the western border_ followed the December 2001 terror attack on Parliament that brought India and Pakistan to the point of war.

Pande was Commander-in-Chief_ Andaman & Nicobar Command_ from June 2020 to May 2021 and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief_ Eastern Command from June 2021 to January 2022.

Lt Gen Manoj Pande has served as chief engineer in the United Nations mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
