Joe Biden will speak to Modi over Russian energy imports

US President Joe Biden will virtually encounter Indian Premier Narendra Modi on Monday. President Biden will continue our close consultations on the consequences of Russia s cruel war against Ukraine and mitigating its destabilizing impact on world food supply and commodity markets_ Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement on Sunday.

Daleep Singh_ United States Deputy National Security Adviser for International Economics said the US will not set any  red line for India on its Oil imports from Russia but does not want to perceive a  rapid acceleration in procurements.

India has bought as a minimum 13 million barrels of Russian crude oil since the Russia invaded Ukraine in late February. That compared with some 16m barrels for the whole of last year.

US President Biden has previously said that only India among the 'Quad' group of nations was  somewhat shaky in acting against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. The South Asian nation has tried to balance its ties with Russia and the West but unlike other members of the Quad nations- the United States_ Japan and Australia- it has not imposed sanctions on Russia.

Two premiers will also discuss cooperation on a range of issues including ending the COVID-19 pandemic_ countering the climate crisis_ strengthening the world economy_ and upholding a free_ open_ rules-based international order to bolster security_ democracy_ and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific_ Psaki said.
