Bhutan's Tshering Tobgay to become Premier for second time

Bhutanese citizens have re-elected Tshering Tobgay for a second term as Prime Minister after his party secured nearly two-thirds of the seats.

The election revolved around pressing economic issues that have prompted reconsideration of Bhutan's enduring commitment to prioritizing 'Gross National Happiness' over conventional growth metrics.
Situated between the world's most populous nations, China and India, Bhutan's election garnered significant attention from both countries due to their strategic interests in contested border regions.
Tshering Tobgay, the leader of the progressive People's Democratic Party (PDP), previously served as the Prime Minister of Bhutan from 2013 to 2018. In the latest election held on Tuesday, Tobgay's party secured 30 out of the 47 available seats, according to official records.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bhutan's significant trade partner, conveyed his 'heartiest congratulations to my friend' Tobgay for his electoral triumph, as shared in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
