China intends to set up a large hospital in Bangladesh

China is preparing to make a substantial contribution to Bangladesh’s healthcare system through the establishment of a large-scale hospital. The proposed facility, tentatively named the China-Bangladesh Friendship General Hospital, is part of a broader initiative aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in health services.
Potential sites for the hospital are currently being explored in Dhaka, Chattogram, and various northern regions of the country.
Details of this initiative emerged from the minutes of a meeting held on 19 February at the Economic Relations Division (ERD), which focused on China’s involvement in Bangladesh’s health sector. Additional confirmation has come from sources within the Ministry of Health.
Health ministry officials noted that China’s support will extend beyond hospital construction. Investments will also target various other areas within the healthcare sector. For instance, equipment for a robotic physiotherapy center has already been delivered to Bangladesh under this initiative.
China has played a consistent role in supporting Bangladesh’s health industry. Local pharmaceutical companies frequently source active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from Chinese suppliers, underscoring the existing ties between the two countries in this field.
A senior official from the Ministry of Health revealed that the new hospital will be developed with expertise from internationally renowned medical professionals. There are plans to transform the surrounding area—particularly in the northern part of the country—into a comprehensive healthcare hub. Authorities are expected to finalize the hospital's location within this month.
