UN chief Guterres to arrive Dhaka today on four-day visit

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka this Thursday afternoon for a four-day official visit, following an invitation from Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

According to sources, Guterres will arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) at 5:00 PM aboard Emirates flight EK-586. He will be welcomed by Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain upon his arrival.
On Friday morning, the UN chief will meet with Chief Adviser Dr. Yunus at his office. Later that day, Guterres will also hold separate meetings with Adviser Touhid Hossain and Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the High Representative on Rohingya Issues and Priority Matters, at a hotel in the capital.
Following the meetings, Guterres and Dr. Yunus will travel to Cox’s Bazar to visit Rohingya refugee camps. Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Faruk E Azam Bir Protik will greet them at Cox’s Bazar International Airport around noon.
During their visit, a comprehensive briefing will be held at a watchtower overlooking the refugee camps and the Myanmar border. The session will be led by the UN Resident Coordinator, the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), the ISCG Principal Coordinator, and representatives from IOM and UNHCR.
Additionally, the World Bank will present a briefing highlighting the contribution of international financial institutions (IFIs) to infrastructure development and human capital investment within the refugee communities.
Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, noted that approximately 100,000 Rohingya refugees are expected to join an Iftar gathering with both the Chief Adviser and the UN Secretary-General. This communal meal aims to honor Bangladesh's continued hospitality toward the displaced Rohingya population.
The delegation is scheduled to return to Dhaka later that evening, around 8:40 PM.
On Saturday, Guterres will visit the newly established UN common premises and attend a special photo exhibition marking 50 years of Bangladesh-UN partnership. Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan and Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin are expected to accompany him.
The Secretary-General will also engage in a meeting with the UN Country Team and all UN staff members in Bangladesh. His agenda includes a roundtable discussion on reforms and a separate dialogue with youth representatives.
Later, Guterres will participate in a meeting with civil society members, moderated by Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan.
Before concluding the day, a joint press briefing is expected to be held by the UN Secretary-General and Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain, followed by an Iftar and early dinner hosted by Chief Adviser Dr. Yunus.
Guterres is scheduled to depart from Dhaka on Sunday morning, marking the end of his second official visit to Bangladesh.
