'Bangladesh wants good working ties with India based on mutual respect and shared interests'

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain emphasized on Monday that Bangladesh aims to maintain a constructive and cooperative relationship with India, grounded in mutual respect and shared interests.
His remarks came in response to a question regarding recent statements made by Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar about the bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries.
"Bangladesh will, of course, determine its own position. At the same time, India must also decide on the nature of the relationship it wants to have with Bangladesh. It is a matter of mutual understanding, and there is nothing unusual about discussing it openly," Hossain said the state-run BSS news agency.
He reiterated Bangladesh's clear stance on fostering positive engagement with India, highlighting the importance of mutual understanding. "Our objective is to build a relationship based on respect and common interests, and our position on this matter is straightforward," he told.
Addressing the issue of minorities, Hossain stressed that it remains an internal matter for each country. "The situation of minorities in Bangladesh is for Bangladesh to address, just as India's handling of its minority communities is its own concern," he stated.
He further emphasized the importance of a non-interference policy in internal affairs, asserting that Bangladesh is committed to protecting the rights of all its citizens, including minorities. "They have the same rights as I do, and the government is dedicated to ensuring those rights," he concluded.
