Rohingya Crisis: Dhaka asks UN for concrete measures for early

Bangladesh has called on the United Nations to engage the global community in ensuring that the upcoming international conference later this year adopts concrete steps toward a swift and lasting resolution of the Rohingya crisis.

Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the High Representative for the Rohingya issue and priority matters in Bangladesh, met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the forthcoming UN International Conference on Rohingya Muslims and other Myanmar minorities, scheduled for 2025.
The UN General Assembly reached a consensus on holding the conference. Secretary-General Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s unwavering commitment to achieving a durable solution to the Rohingya crisis. He also assured his support in securing necessary funding for these efforts, according to the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN.
Dr. Khalilur underscored the urgent need for international action to address the crisis, which continues to pose a threat to regional peace and stability.
He also highlighted the severe humanitarian conditions in Myanmar's Rakhine State, warning that an impending famine could further destabilize the already fragile region.
Expressing Bangladesh’s willingness to support UN-led initiatives in Rakhine, Dr. Khalilur emphasized the importance of preventing further humanitarian deterioration, reviving livelihoods, and creating conditions conducive to the voluntary, safe, and dignified repatriation of displaced Rohingyas currently in Bangladesh.
He also brought attention to the declining external funding and urged the Secretary-General to leverage his influence in mobilizing necessary financial resources.
Secretary-General Guterres commended Bangladesh’s continued generosity in hosting nearly 1.2 million Rohingya refugees for the past eight years. He also acknowledged Bangladesh’s crucial role in facilitating UN-led humanitarian assistance in Rakhine during this critical time.
