Bangladesh-Uruguay seek collaboration in emerging sectors

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties between Bangladesh and Uruguay, particularly through sports, as a means to enhance bilateral relations across multiple sectors, including trade and business.

This call for closer collaboration came during a courtesy meeting between the Chief Adviser and Alberto Guani, the non-resident Ambassador of Uruguay to Bangladesh, held at the State Guest House Jamuna on Sunday.
During the discussion, Ambassador Guani highlighted that there are numerous untapped avenues of cooperation between Uruguay and Bangladesh, offering significant potential benefits for both nations. He also commended Bangladesh’s leadership in the field of social business, acknowledging its pioneering role on the global stage.
Uruguay currently exports wool, soybeans, and other agricultural products to Bangladesh. Although trade volume remains relatively modest, the consistent double-digit growth in recent years signifies a promising trend.
The ambassador identified several promising areas for future cooperation, including agriculture, manufacturing, semiconductors, UAV technology, satellite development, and specialized IT technology transfer.
Additionally, he stressed the importance of strengthening connectivity between Bangladesh and South America to bridge existing gaps and foster deeper engagement between the two countries.
Recognizing the shared enthusiasm for sports, particularly football, the Chief Adviser stated, "Both nations have a passion for sports, especially football. We can use that as a starting point to build cooperation in other areas as well."
Encouraging Uruguayan investors to explore business opportunities in Bangladesh, Professor Yunus invited the ambassador to facilitate investment ventures that would benefit both countries. He also expressed keen interest in collaborating on renewable and clean energy initiatives, which Uruguay actively promotes.
