UNHCR to work with Bangladesh to resolve Rohingya crisis

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, on Tuesday, said that his agency would support Bangladesh in its quest to find a durable solution to the Rohingya crisis.

Grandi made this commitment during a meeting with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
'We stand ready to cooperate with you,' Grandi assured Professor Yunus after the latter sought UNHCR’s assistance, particularly for hosting a major global conference later this year to address the Rohingya issue.
Professor Yunus emphasized the need to refocus international attention on the crisis, noting that the recent influx of around 100,000 additional Rohingya refugees has further strained Bangladesh’s resources. 'The situation is becoming more complicated. They are pushing more Rohingyas into Bangladesh,' he said.
Grandi expressed gratitude to Bangladesh for improving living conditions for Rohingya refugees by allowing the use of better construction materials for their shelters. Previously, refugees were limited to building shelters with bamboo and tarpaulins, but recent changes have enabled them to use more durable materials.
The two leaders also discussed the dire humanitarian situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, where ongoing conflict between the Arakan Army and the Myanmar military has exacerbated challenges in the region.
