Bangladesh calls for constructive talks to ease border tensions with India

The Government of Bangladesh has called for resolving ongoing tensions at the Chapainawabganj border through constructive dialogue in line with existing bilateral agreements. This approach aims to ensure peace and stability along the shared border, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

The tensions arose following clashes between citizens of both countries, leaving at least three Bangladeshis injured on Saturday. The conflict reportedly involved disputes over green wheat harvesting and tree cutting, exacerbated by a bomb explosion in the area. Despite a flag meeting held on Sunday between the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF), local residents remain anxious about the situation.
Earlier this month, the BSF began erecting barbed-wire fencing within 150 yards of the international border in certain locations. This activity was halted after intervention by the BGB, leading to heightened diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs subsequently summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to address the issue. In a parallel move, India’s Ministry of External Affairs summoned Bangladesh’s Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi, Nurla Islam, to discuss their concerns.
