BGB authorised to use sound grenades, teargas to maintain border security

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been authorized to deploy sound grenades and tear gas shells to ensure border security, following recent clashes and attacks between Indian and Bangladeshi nationals at the Chapainawabganj border.

Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Bangladesh Home Affairs Adviser, announced the decision on 20 January while addressing reporters after a meeting of the ministry's advisory council committee on law and order affairs at the secretariat in Dhaka.
The adviser explained that during the recent border incident in Chapainawabganj, the BGB lacked access to non-lethal crowd control tools such as sound grenades and tear gas shells.
'Although they were equipped with lethal weapons, they chose not to use them. To fill this gap the BGB has now been granted approval to procure and deploy sound grenades and tear gas for border security operations,' said Lt Gen Chowdhury.
