Bangladesh urges India to avoid border provocations
Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin and Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma
Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin has urged the Indian government to instruct its relevant authorities to refrain from engaging in provocative actions that could heighten tensions along the shared border between the two nations.
The Foreign Secretary expressed Bangladesh’s concerns to Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma during a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday. The discussion was prompted by recent activities involving India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Bangladesh-India border.
Earlier in the day, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury suggested that the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka might be summoned to address these border-related issues.
High Commissioner Verma was seen entering the Ministry of Foreign Affairs around 3 p.m. on Sunday, following reports of increased tensions along the border. After the meeting, which lasted over 30 minutes, Verma briefly spoke to reporters, emphasizing the mutual understanding between the two countries regarding border security.
'We have an agreement concerning border fencing for security purposes, and our border enforcement agencies, BSF and BGB, are actively communicating on these matters,' Verma stated. He expressed optimism about the cooperative implementation of measures to combat cross-border crimes, including smuggling and trafficking.
During the meeting, Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin voiced his concerns over unauthorized attempts by the BSF to construct barbed wire fencing along the border. He noted that such actions have created tensions and disrupted peace in the area.
He further emphasized that building barbed wire fences without proper authorization contradicts the spirit of cooperation and undermines the friendly relations between Bangladesh and India.
