Dhaka seeks global consensus for Rohingya repatriation
The interim government is seeking global consensus for the prompt repatriation of Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar, considering it an urgent need, Dr Khalilur Rahman, high representative on Rohingya issues and priority affairs to the chief adviser, said at an international conference in Qatar.
Speaking at the Doha Forum held at the Sheraton Hotel in Qatar's capital, Dr. Rahman stressed the need for a unified global effort to resolve the ongoing Rohingya crisis. "We call on the global community to forge a consensus for the immediate and safe return of Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar," he stated, as per a release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During a session titled "Bangladesh at a Crossroads: Governance, Democratic Reforms, and the Post-Sheikh Hasina Trajectory," Dr. Rahman highlighted the immense challenges Bangladesh has faced in hosting nearly 1.2 million Rohingyas for over seven years. He underlined the country’s humanitarian commitment despite its limited resources and the strain on infrastructure and social systems.
He also expressed optimism about an upcoming UN conference on the Rohingya issue, slated for next year. Rahman hoped this event would serve as a critical platform for stakeholders to enhance cooperation and speed up the repatriation process.
Additionally, the representative addressed regional dynamics, specifically Bangladesh-India relations. He criticized the spread of misinformation and urged India to act more responsibly as Bangladesh undergoes a crucial phase of democratic transition.
