Indian festival footage being promoted as attacks on temples in Bangladesh: Dismislab
Dismislab found that a video being circulated on a verified X (formerly Twitter) account showed RT India, claiming an attack on Hindu temples in Bangladesh, is not authentic.
The video in shows an idol being dismantled, purportedly as part of an attack on temples in Bangladesh. However, Dismislab confirmed that the video originates from Sultanpur in Burdwan district, West Bengal, during a unique ritual where a 12-foot Kali idol is ceremonially broken and immersed every 12 years. The original footage was posted on Facebook on November 29 with the hashtag #SultanpurKaliMataNiranjan, aligning with this tradition. Further corroboration was found on the Facebook page Sultanpur Kiranmoyee Pathagar, where matching scenes of the ritual were documented.
In another instance of misinformation, Dismislab debunked a video posted by the X account 'Baba Benaras,' which claimed widespread attacks on Hindu temples and devotees in Bangladesh on December 1. The fact-check revealed that the video actually shows an incident from August 29 at the shrine of Ali Pagla in Sirajganj, Bangladesh. The event involved vandalism at the shrine near Bamanjani Bazaar in Kazipur Upazila.
The video had previously been published by a Bangladeshi YouTube channel, The Metro TV, on the same day, titled 'Ali Pagla's shrine in Kazipur, Sirajganj being destroyed' in Bangla. Dismislab verified that the footage matched the original incident, dispelling the false narrative of widespread religious violence in Bangladesh.
These cases underline the importance of thorough fact-checking in countering the spread of misinformation, particularly when such claims have the potential to incite communal tensions.
