'Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Bhutan should think of creating a South Asian grid'

Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday called for creating a South Asian grid to share the hydroelectricity generated by Nepal and Bhutan.

'Hydroelectric power from Nepal could easily be brought to Bangladesh, as the distance is only 40 miles,' said Professor Yunus. He emphasized that electricity from Nepal would be affordable and that Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Bhutan should consider establishing a regional power grid.
Speaking at a meeting with the Social Business Group during the climate conference in Baku, Yunus highlighted that a large portion of the hydroelectric potential in the Himalayan region remains untapped due to the absence of a cross-border electricity grid connecting the four countries.
Nepalese officials have noted that Nepal has the capacity to produce up to 40,000 megawatts of hydroelectric power, which could reduce dependence on fossil fuels in larger nations like India and Bangladesh.
At the COP29 climate conference in Azerbaijan, Professor Yunus stressed that Bangladesh prioritizes water management to mitigate flooding and optimize water use to drive economic growth. 'Water is our primary environmental concern. We must manage water in a way that aligns with ecological sustainability,' Yunus stated.
