Trump's policies could offer opportunities for Bangladesh business

United States President-elect Donald Trump's policies may present new business opportunities for Bangladesh, as his tougher stance on China could shift export orders to Bangladeshi manufacturers, according to economists and industry leaders.

Bangladeshi apparel exporters believe that US trade policies affecting China—one of Bangladesh's biggest rivals in the global apparel industry—could have a major impact on their sector. Since the US is the top export market for Bangladeshi apparel, any policy changes targeting China could significantly benefit Bangladesh, which ranks second globally in apparel production after China.
Many in the garment industry are optimistic that Trump's proposed higher tariffs on Chinese imports could increase demand for Bangladeshi garments in the US market.
Known for his business-oriented approach, Trump has also expressed a preference for reducing US involvement in foreign conflicts, which could foster a more stable global environment and a favorable climate for trade.
Dr. Mohammad Abdur Razzaque, Chairman of the Research and Policy Integration for Development, noted that Trump’s policies could bring both opportunities and challenges for Bangladesh. He pointed out that stricter US measures on China could redirect orders to alternative suppliers, including Bangladesh. Additionally, Trump’s aim to reduce military engagements abroad may contribute to global stability, creating a positive environment for international trade.
