Yunus-Modi meet likely on BIMSTEC sidelines
A much-hyped meeting between the head of interim government of Bangladesh, Dr Muhammad Yunus and Indian Premier Narendra Modi may take place on the sidelines of BIMSTEC summit scheduled for November.
Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain mentioned this possibility during a press conference discussing Bangladesh's involvement in the UN General Assembly and other current affairs.
Hossain noted that while he met with India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, in New York, a meeting between Dr. Yunus and Prime Minister Modi could not be arranged as Modi had left New York just a day before Yunus arrived.
Modi will not attend the Commonwealth summit set for October 21-26 in Apia, Samoa, due to his participation in the BRICS summit, which holds greater significance for India.
Similarly, Dr. Yunus will also miss the Commonwealth summit. Hossain suggested that a potential meeting between the two leaders might take place at the BIMSTEC summit next month.
BIMSTEC, short for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand as member countries.
