UN pledges support for Bangladesh reforms, flood rehabilitation efforts

The United Nations has pledged support for the ongoing reforms and flood rehabilitation efforts in Bangladesh.

UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis announced the organization’s commitment to assist Bangladesh across various sectors, including police and election reforms, as the Interim Government implements a comprehensive restructuring of national institutions. This was stated during a meeting with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus at his office in Tejgaon on Sunday.
According to a statement from the Chief Advisor’s Office, the discussions between Lewis and Yunus covered key topics such as institutional reforms, corruption, flood management, the Rohingya refugee crisis, and the ongoing UN-led investigation into the violent events of July and August.
Lewis praised the interim government’s ambitious reform agenda and expressed appreciation for Yunus’s leadership during this transformative period. The discussion also touched on reforms within the security forces, particularly in the police administration, which Yunus emphasized as a top priority for the government.
Lewis confirmed that the UN investigation team has begun its inquiry into the violence and unrest that occurred during July and August. Several UN agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), are exploring ways to provide assistance to the victims, including medical aid and psychological support.
In addition, Lewis noted that the UN has allocated $4 million towards flood rehabilitation in the eastern and southern regions of Bangladesh, which were severely impacted by recent flooding.
Chief Advisor dr. Yunus also requested UN assistance in improving the lives of children living in Rohingya refugee camps, emphasizing the need for a brighter future for these displaced children.
