Transition support for Bangladesh crucial now, says US official Verma
US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma has said it is more important to support Bangladesh amid ongoing political unrest rather than comment on its future direction.
Speaking at a discussion titled 'The United States and India: Milestone Reached and the Pathway Ahead,' hosted by the Hudson Institute in Washington, Verma underscored the need for a peaceful, democratic transition.
Verma, who holds the third-highest position in the US Department of State, addressed a question concerning the unrest in Bangladesh following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina. He expressed hope that security and law and order would soon be restored, allowing citizens to access essential economic services.
He further noted that decisions about elections and interim governments should be made by the people of Bangladesh, with the US playing a supportive role in their democratic process. Verma, a former US ambassador to India, highlighted the long-term nature of these efforts in ensuring stability and progress in the country.
