Rohingya genocide day: 2000 more Rohingya enter Bangladesh
More than 2,000 new Rohingya refugees have entered Bangladesh. The new refugees have taken shelter mostly in three out of 27 camps.
BGB officials have acknowledged the significant influx of refugees but have indicated that they are actively working to prevent additional arrivals.
Meanwhile, Rohingya refugees observed the seventh 'Rohingya Genocide Day' on Sunday. The day of remembrance highlights the tragic events that began seven years ago when the majority of the Rohingya community was forced to escape Myanmar’s Rakhine state, an act deemed genocide by the United Nations and other international bodies.
According to the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry, the country currently hosts over 1.3 million Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar and on Bhasan Char island, with no successful repatriations despite previous efforts.
In spite of heavy rain, at least 10,000 Rohingya refugees gathered in the field of Camp-4 in Ukhia, within the Cox's Bazar district, to observe the seventh 'Rohingya Genocide Day.'They chanted slogans such as 'We want to go back to our homeland' and 'Ensure rights for the Rohingya.'
Recent violence in Rakhine state, involving clashes between the Arakan Army and Myanmar armed forces, has led at least 2,000 new refugees to cross into Bangladesh.
'We are aware of the new arrivals,' stated Mizanur Rahman, Bangladesh's Refugee, Relief, and Repatriation Commissioner. 'We do not yet know the exact number that has entered.'
Rahman reassured that the new interim government will continue providing humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya refugees and affirmed, 'We remain committed to their safe and voluntary repatriation.'
