UNICEF to continue support Bangladesh for Rohingya children
UNICEF executive director Catherine Russell has said over the past 12 months, they have been 'increasingly concerned' about the security situation in the Rohingya refugee camps and reports of child rights violations.
On Sunday, Russell stated, 'We are ready to collaborate with the new Interim Government of Bangladesh to ensure these children are protected and have access to essential services.'
Russell commended Bangladesh’s ongoing support for the refugee population, especially children, emphasizing its critical importance.
Nearly seven years after the initial influx, around half a million Rohingya children are growing up in the world’s largest refugee camp, with many of them having been born as refugees, according to a report from New York.
The Rohingya community remains entirely dependent on humanitarian aid, living in temporary shelters within highly congested camps.
Since November 13, 2023, escalating conflict has displaced an estimated 327,000 people in Rakhine State and Paletwa Township in Chin. This has brought the total number of internally displaced people in Rakhine State to well over half a million.
