Millions stranded as floods hit Bangladesh
The flood situation in southeastern Bangladesh has deteriorated due to continuous rainfall and rising levels of rivers, leaving over 3 million people stranded.
The floodwaters have completely submerged roads and highways in the Feni, Cumilla, and Noakhali districts, isolating them and turning them into virtual islands.
In Cumilla, the Gumti and Muhuri rivers have swollen significantly due to persistent rain and the recent release of water from a sluice gate at Dumber Lake in Tripura, India, according to officials from Bangladesh's Water Development Board on Wednesday. but India refutes claims of causing floods in Bangladesh.
Moreover, rivers such as the Kushiyara, Manu, Dhalai, Khowai, Muhuri, Feni, Gumti, and Halda have already crossed dangerous levels, according to the same sources.
In certain areas, including the Hobiganj district in northeastern Bangladesh, water levels have reached heights not observed in the last 50 years, as reported by the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board.
The FFWC has indicated that the water level in the Gumti River in Cumilla district could rise above dangerous levels within the next 24 hours, potentially leading to short-term flooding in nearby low-lying regions.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department predicts moderate to heavy rainfall in the southeastern and eastern regions, along with neighboring upstream areas, over the next 24 hours.
