BIMSTEC, which stands for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, comprises seven member states: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
Established on June 6, 1997, through the Bangkok Declaration, BIMSTEC is unique in that it unites five South Asian countries with two Southeast Asian nations, representing 22% of the global population and a combined GDP of 4.5 trillion US dollar.
In 2014, during the Third BIMSTEC Summit, it was decided to establish the BIMSTEC Secretariat in Dhaka, which has since provided a formal structure for enhancing cooperation among member states.
Following the upcoming summit, Bangladesh is set to assume the chairmanship of BIMSTEC.
