Interim govt mulls holding election after necessary reforms: Dr Yunus to diplomats

Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has asked foreign diplomats for their support for the interim government so Bangladesh can carry out a free, fair, and participatory election.

During a briefing with representatives from various diplomatic missions in Dhaka on Sunday, Dr. Yunus said.
'I inherited a country that was, in many ways, in complete disarray. The dictatorship under Sheikh Hasina, in its attempt to cling to power, dismantled every institution of the country.'
He detailed the situation, saying, 'The judiciary was compromised, and democratic rights were brutally suppressed for over a decade. elections were blatantly rigged, depriving generations of young people of their voting rights. Banks were looted with political backing, and state funds were misused.'
Yunus assured the diplomats that elections would take place once essential reforms were implemented to restore these institutions.
'We will conduct a free, fair, and participatory election as soon as we fulfill our mandate to implement crucial reforms in the Election Commission, judiciary, civil administration, security forces, and media. We are also committed to promoting national reconciliation.'
He also discussed the need for reforms in other sectors and pledged to uphold international law.
According to Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, diplomats from over 50 countries, including the United States, India, China, and Russia, attended the event.
