Bangladesh to consider Teesta proposals from both India and China: PM Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced today that the Bangladeshi government is open to evaluating proposals from both India and China regarding the Teesta project. The decision will ultimately favor the proposal that most benefits the people of Bangladesh.

'Both China and India have made proposals. We will assess each one and choose the one that aligns best with the interests of our people,' stated the Prime Minister during a press conference at her official residence, Gonobhaban.
When asked if she has a preference between India or China for the Teesta project, Hasina responded, 'Our relationships are guided by the developmental needs of Bangladesh. Our friendship with India dates back to the 1971 Liberation War, marking a significant historical bond. At the same time, China's rapid development offers valuable lessons for us. We aim to maintain strong relations with both nations.'
She emphasized that her approach does not favor one country over another but is based on ensuring the well-being and interests of Bangladesh.
Addressing the specifics of the Teesta project, Hasina acknowledged the ongoing discussions and differences, particularly with India, with whom Bangladesh shares water from 54 rivers.
'When evaluating a proposal, we consider its suitability, our ability to repay any associated loans, the benefits we will derive post-completion, and the overall impact on our people,' she explained.
