Bangladesh approves 5-year plan to import 40MW hydroelectricity from Nepal

The Bangladesh government has approved a plan to import 40MW of hydroelectric power from Nepal for the next 5 years.

Cabinet Division Secretary (Coordination and Reforms) Mahmudul Hossain Khan stated that each unit of this electricity will be priced at Tk8.17.

Mahmudul Hossain explained that the electricity will be transmitted to Bangladesh via the Indian grid. A trading margin of Rs0.59 per unit will be paid to India for this transmission. "Additionally, we will need to cover the transmission cost to India, although the exact amount is yet to be determined," he added.
To support this import, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has initiated a five-year project valued at Tk650 crore.
An agreement between the Nepal Electricity Authority and the BPDB will be formalized to finalize this arrangement, according to the cabinet secretary.
The exact start date for the electricity supply will be decided during the prime minister's upcoming visit to Nepal.
