Cyclone Remal to hit Bangladesh-West Bengal coasts Sunday night
Cyclone 'Remal' has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and is expected to make landfall between India's West Bengal's Sagar Island and Bangladesh's Khepupara on today night. This marks the first cyclone of the pre-monsoon season in the Bay of Bengal.
According to an update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at 8 am on Sunday, Cyclone 'Remal' has strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm. It is currently positioned approximately 290 km south-southeast of Khepupara and 270 km south-southeast of Sagar Island.
The IMD forecasts that the cyclone will intensify further and is expected to cross the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara, with wind speeds ranging from 110 to 120 km/h, and gusts reaching up to 135 km/h around midnight.
Additional weather models suggest the cyclone might reach the coast by late evening.
Bangladesh has instructed its maritime ports of Mongla and Payra to hoist Great Danger Signal No. 10, while Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar ports have been advised to raise Great Danger Signal No. 9.
A storm surge of up to 1.5 meters is anticipated to flood low-lying areas of coastal West Bengal and Bangladesh during the landfall.
The weather office has warned fishermen against venturing into the sea in the north Bay of Bengal until Monday morning.
