Bangladesh calls for peace amid Iran-Israel tensions
Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud has emphasized Bangladesh's stance against war in the Middle East, urging the international community to play a proactive role in de-escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.
'We are for peace, not war. We want to see countries play an active role in de-escalating tensions [between Iran and Israel]. We also call for an end to the killings in Gaza,' Foreign Minister said.
Mahmud's remarks came in response to questions from journalists regarding Iran's recent drone and missile attacks on Israel, purportedly in retaliation for Israeli strikes on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, in early April.
Highlighting the interconnected nature of the conflict, Mahmud suggested that Iran's actions might have been different had it not been provoked first.
'We hope that nations capable of influencing the situation will step forward to de-escalate tensions between Iran and Israel,' Mahmud stated.
Addressing another pressing issue, Mahmud credited the concerted efforts of the government and other stakeholders for the successful release of 23 Bangladeshi sailors and the Bangladeshi-flagged ship MV Abdullah from pirate captivity.
Bangladesh's Foreign Minister informed journalists about the recent influx of nine additional members of the Border Guard Police of Myanmar into Bangladesh through Southern Myanmar. He disclosed ongoing discussions between Myanmar and Bangladesh regarding the repatriation of all 180 BGP members, including those who had previously entered Bangladesh during conflicts between the Myanmar military and rebel forces.
