WFP lauds Bangladesh for 'massive success' over past 15 years

The Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Cindy H McCain, commended Bangladesh for its substantial success across various sectors over the last 15 years.

She highlighted Bangladesh's significant role in promoting women's empowerment, addressing school dropout rates through effective school feeding programs, and bolstering resilience in the face of climate adversities.
McCain particularly lauded the leadership of Bangladesh's Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, for providing refuge to the Rohingyas, forcibly displaced from Myanmar due to ethnic cleansing and genocide perpetrated by the Myanmar government. During a ceremony marking the presentation of the Letter of Commission accrediting Md Monirul Islam as the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to WFP, the Executive Director expressed her admiration for Bangladesh's achievements.
Ambassador Monirul Islam in his capacity emphasized the multi-dimensional, enduring, and highly effective nature of WFP's activities in Bangladesh. He apprised the WFP Chief of the government's substantial engagements, both financially and operationally, in initiatives such as the School Feeding Programme and Rice Fortification Programme.
Acknowledging WFP's unparalleled support in addressing the Rohingya crisis Ambassador Islam appealed to WFP's Executive Board to use its influence to encourage the Government of Myanmar to ensure the safe, assured, and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas to their homeland.
