Dhaka-Delhi to advance Teesta talks after India's polls
Dhaka and New Delhi are set to resume discussions on the long-awaited Teesta water sharing treaty following India's upcoming general election scheduled for April-May this year, according to Hasan Mahmud, the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh.
Mahmud revealed this information after his meeting with Indian counterpart Dr. S Jaishankar in New Delhi, marking his inaugural bilateral meeting with India since assuming office.
Mahmud clarified that the Indian central government has no objections to the Teesta deal; instead, the objection originated from the state government of West Bengal. Emphasizing the importance of the Ganges water-sharing treaty, set to expire in 2026, Mahmud discussed the need for its renewal during the meeting.
Addressing the issue of border killings along the Bangladesh-India frontier, both foreign ministers reiterated their commitment to avoiding lethal weapons along the border to prevent tragic incidents. Mahmud noted that using non-lethal weapons could significantly reduce such incidents, and both ministers expressed consensus on this matter. Additionally, discussions encompassed security cooperation between the two neighboring nations.
Mahmud provided insights into the detailed discussions about the current conflict in Myanmar, emphasizing mutual cooperation between Bangladesh and India, given their shared borders with the troubled nation. The foreign minister also reiterated Dhaka's plea to Delhi for Indian support in repatriating forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar, ensuring all citizen rights are upheld.
