China working with Myanmar on ceasefiree efforts in Rakhine for Rohingya repatriation

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen announced on Sunday that China is actively engaged in working efforts with Myanmar to establish a new ceasefire in Rakhine State. The aim is to facilitate the prompt initiation of the Rohingya repatriation process.

After a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yao Wen addressed reporters, emphasizing the importance of addressing the repatriation issue despite the prevailing challenges. He expressed confidence in overcoming the difficulties, citing previous instances where a ceasefire in Rakhine State was achieved with China's mediation.
The ambassador highlighted the substantial progress made under the joint initiative of Bangladesh, China, and Myanmar in terms of Rohingya repatriation. He assured that China would continue to play a constructive role and expressed hope that both Bangladesh and Myanmar would sustain their engagement, working together to create suitable conditions for the timely return of Rohingyas to Myanmar.
In response to a query regarding the Teesta project, Ambassador Yao Wen affirmed China's commitment to supporting Bangladesh but noted that a formal proposal from the Bangladesh side is essential to move forward with assistance in this regard.
Addressing concerns about regional tensions, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud had previously mentioned on Saturday that Bangladesh's security forces along the Myanmar border remain vigilant amid the escalating situation in the neighboring country.
