Bangladesh's ended peaceful polls, counting begins

Bangladesh's 12th Jatiya Sangsad elections concluded peacefully, marking the end of voting across all 299 constituencies with a turnout of 27.15% as of 3 pm.

The voting commenced at 8:00 am and continued uninterrupted until 4:00 pm. However, the candidacy of Mustafizur Rahman Chowdhury, the Awami League candidate for the Chattogram-16 constituency, was revoked by the Election Commission due to a breach of electoral code of conduct involving the alleged threatening of law enforcement officials.
Although marred by a low voter turnout and the opposition parties BNP and Jamaat-e-Islam's boycott, the government declared the election a success. The day witnessed sparsely populated streets in the capital due to the opposition's called hartal.
Despite sporadic incidents of violence, the overall conduct of the elections remained largely peaceful. Out of the 44 political parties registered with the Election Commission, 16 were excluded from the electoral race, catering to around 120 million listed voters.
The Election Commission postponed the election for Naogaon-2 constituency following the demise of an independent candidate, and a new schedule for the seat will soon be announced.
Approximately eight hundred thousand security personnel have been deployed to monitor and maintain a conducive atmosphere during the election period, ensuring compliance with the electoral code of conduct.
