Woman, child among four dead as arsonists torch train in Dhaka
At least four people, including a woman and her child, have died after arsonists allegedly set fire to a train upon its arrival in Dhaka from Netrokona amid a hartal called by the Bangladesh's oposition party BNP.
The Mohanganj Express suffered the brunt of this suspected act of sabotage, with three of its carriages engulfed in flames near the Tejgaon station around 5 am on Tuesday.
Efforts by three firefighting units managed to quell the blaze around 5:12 am, allowing recovery teams to access a burnt carriage where the bodies were discovered.
Among the victims identified by authorities are 35-year-old Nadira Akhter Poppy, her 3-year-old son Yamin, and 40-year-old Md Akhter.
Anwar Hossain, the Superintendent of Railway Police Dhaka, expressed suspicions that this tragic incident might have been motivated by political reasons.
Railway personnel noticed the fire originating at a corridor connecting two train coaches. Despite their efforts using a fire extinguisher, they were unable to contain the flames.
