US-Russia trade biting words over Bangladesh politics
The tension between the United States and Russia has escalated significantly concerning Bangladesh's political landscape. The US State Department openly accused Moscow of distorting Washington's foreign policy stance on Bangladesh's forthcoming elections, leading to a heated exchange of words.
A spokesperson from the US State Department condemned the deliberate misrepresentation by Moscow on November 22nd, alleging that the Kremlin's statement was a calculated misinterpretation of US Ambassador Peter Haas's engagements in Dhaka. The department spokesperson, quoting the US embassy, highlighted the mischaracterization orchestrated by Maria Zakharova, terming it a deliberate act.
Expressing the US's stance, the State Department emphasized the desire for Bangladesh to conduct free and fair elections peacefully, aligning with the aspirations of its people. The official affirmed that the US neither sides with any political party in Bangladesh nor favors one over another.
Earlier, in Moscow during the routine briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zakharova alleged that the US envoy in Dhaka, Ambassador Peter Haas, had convened a meeting with a prominent Bangladeshi opposition figure. Zakharova claimed that during this meeting, discussions revolved around orchestrating large-scale anti-government protests.
Zakharova went on to assert that Haas purportedly assured the opposition leader of information support in case authorities used force against participants in peaceful demonstrations. Furthermore, she claimed that these assurances were made not only by the US embassy but also supposedly on behalf of the embassies of the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries.
Criticizing the US ambassador's alleged actions, Zakharova characterized them as blatant interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state, accusing 'Washington and its allies' of grossly meddling in Bangladesh's sovereignty.
The exchange of accusations and differing narratives between Washington and Moscow has significantly escalated tensions, raising concerns about the international perception and handling of Bangladesh's political scenario.
