EU to send seven observers for Bangladesh national elections

EU to send seven observers for Bangladesh national elections

Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen said that a 7 member team from the European Union (EU) will be sent to observe the upcoming 12th national elections in Bangladesh.

Momen confirmed this development during a press briefing regarding Bangladesh's Premier Sheikh Hasina's forthcoming visit to Brussels from Tuesday to Thursday. He mentioned that the EU had recently informed the Bangladeshi government about this initiative, which was accepted. Notably, Bangladesh will not be responsible for covering the expenses of the EU observer mission.
The decision to dispatch a full-fledged election observation mission by the European Union was previously halted due to budgetary constraints. However, they expressed a willingness to send a smaller team if Bangladesh would bear the associated costs.
The EU's team of observers is expected to arrive in Bangladesh on November 21 and will remain in the country for a duration of two months.
This decision by the European Union follows a previous announcement where they had informed the Bangladeshi Election Commission that they would not be able to observe the Bangladesh general election due to financial limitations. This decision came after a six-member election exploratory mission from the EU visited Bangladesh from July 8 to 23, upon the invitation of the Election Commission.
