Bangladesh's reliance on India, China could increase if US slaps sanctions
According to the International Crisis Group, if the United States and other Western nations opt for heightened pressure and sanctions, it could lead to increased reliance by Bangladesh on India and China.
The report, featured in the October 2023-March 2024 edition of "On the Horizon," suggests that this is a likely scenario, including the imposition of visa bans on top government officials.
The International Crisis Group, an independent organization committed to averting conflicts and influencing policies for a more peaceful world, underscores the potential consequences of these actions.
Additionally, the International Crisis Group notes that such measures could reignite the insurgency in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) and exacerbate security concerns within the Rohingya camps due to deteriorating conditions.
The current status of the government ceasefire with the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) remains uncertain, with indications that the group may continue to engage in clashes with rival armed factions.
Moreover, the report highlights the possibility of an escalating turf war between criminal and armed groups, particularly involving the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) and the rival Rohingya Solidarity Organisation. This conflict could intensify within and around the camps in Cox's Bazar district, potentially putting civilians at risk in the crossfire.
