US Deputy Assistant Secretary visits Dhaka to discuss key matters

US Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, Afreen Akhter, has arrived in Dhaka, on Monday to engage in discussions regarding issues of mutual interest, with a primary focus on elections and the Rohingya crisis.

Prior to her arrival, Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen, who was in Colombo, briefed her about the preparations for the upcoming national election in Bangladesh.
Minister Momen revealed that Afreen Akhter's visit primarily centers around two vital issues: the Rohingya crisis and the electoral process in Bangladesh. He emphasized that the United States shares the same aspiration as the Bangladeshi government for conducting free and fair elections in the country.
Momen also conveyed to Akhter that the election process in Bangladesh is markedly distinct from that in the United States. People in Bangladesh participate in the electoral process with tremendous enthusiasm, and it is akin to a festive atmosphere. "It's a completely different scenario here in Bangladesh," Minister Momen noted.
During her visit, it is possible that Afreen Akhter may also pay a visit to the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar.
Afreen Akhter is responsible for handling matters in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and the Maldives, in addition to her role in the Office of Security and Transnational Affairs. She previously served as the National Security and Foreign Affairs Adviser to US Senator Chris Van Hollen.
This visit marks Afreen Akhter's second trip to Dhaka this year, following her earlier visit in May.
