US pre-election monitoring team arrives in Dhaka

An international team comprising the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) has landed in Bangladesh to initiate a pre-election assessment mission (PEAM). This mission aims to closely monitor electoral preparations and provide an impartial and independent evaluation.

From October 8 to 12, the delegation, consisting of six members, will engage with a diverse array of election stakeholders, including government officials, political party leaders, election authorities, civil society representatives, and other relevant parties.
The delegation is co-chaired by Inderfurth and Bonnie Glick, former Deputy Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Other members include Maria Chin Abdullah, a former Member of the House of Representatives from Malaysia; Jamil Jaffer, formerly associated with the Office of the President of the United States as Associate Counsel; Manpreet Singh Anand, NDI Regional Director for Asia-Pacific; and Johanna Kao, IRI Senior Director of the Asia-Pacific Division.
Bonnie Glick emphasized the significance of this joint pre-election assessment mission, underlining their commitment to supporting democracy in Bangladesh. She added, "We look forward to engaging with key stakeholders and offering an objective, impartial, and timely analysis as the nation approaches its elections."
The delegation's assessment will be conducted in strict adherence to the laws of Bangladesh and in line with the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation, a commitment signed in 2005 at the United Nations.
Both NDI and IRI are nonpartisan, non-governmental organizations dedicated to bolstering and fortifying democratic institutions and practices globally. Over the past three decades, these institutions have collectively observed more than 200 elections across more than 50 countries.
