Biden, Hasina discussed importance of improving Dhaka-Washington relations
During the recent G20 summit held in New Delhi, India, Bangladesh's Premier Sheikh Hasina, engaged in discussions with US President Joe Biden regarding the pivotal need to bolster their bilateral relationship, particularly in the context of pressing issues such as climate change.
At a White House press briefing on Tuesday, John Kirby, the National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, shed light on their conversations.
When queried about US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan's meetings with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh, and whether the discussions had touched upon Delhi-Ottawa relations, Kirby responded by stating that it would be appropriate for the two countries involved to address their bilateral ties.
However, the focus soon shifted to the relationship between the United States and Bangladesh, as well as President Biden's informal meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In response to this line of questioning, Kirby conveyed, "They did talk about the importance of free and fair elections." This underscores the shared commitment to democratic values and the electoral process as a cornerstone of their diplomatic discussions.
