Rohingyas shouldn't be punished for the action taken by Myanmar: US envoy

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas emphasized the collective responsibility of the international community in ensuring that conditions are established in Myanmar to facilitate the dignified return of Rohingyas to their homeland.

Speaking as a keynote speaker at an event, Ambassador Haas stressed the importance of protecting, educating, and upholding the dignity of the Rohingya population in their current places of residence.
He firmly asserted that the Rohingyas should not bear the consequences for actions taken by Myanmar and should be treated with fairness and without discrimination.
Ambassador Haas underscored the need for sustained international pressure on Myanmar, recognizing that finding a solution to the crisis is a complex and challenging endeavor.
He mentioned the exploration of resettlement as an option but acknowledged its limited capacity, primarily intended for the most vulnerable individuals.
The ambassador also highlighted the significance of holding those responsible for the Rohingya genocide accountable for their actions.
Ambassador Haas commended Bangladesh for its generosity in providing shelter to the Rohingya community, emphasizing that without such support, the situation would have been considerably worse.
In summary, Ambassador Haas urged the global community to work together to ensure the protection, dignity, and fair treatment of the Rohingyas and to continue efforts to address the complex issues surrounding their plight.
