UK announces £3 million additional humanitarian support to Rohingyas

In a significant move to alleviate the ongoing humanitarian crisis Sir Philip Barton, the Permanent Under-Secretary of the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), has announced a substantial contribution of £3 million in new funding to aid Rohingyas residing in Cox's Bazar and Bhasan Char.

This commitment underscores the United Kingdom's unwavering commitment to standing alongside the Rohingya community in Bangladesh, who have been enduring the repercussions of the 2017 atrocities.
This announcement was made through a press release issued by the British High Commission on September 12th, further emphasizing the UK's commitment to providing essential support to those affected by this enduring crisis. The £3 million in funding will be channeled through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a move that highlights the UK's dedication to cooperating with international organizations to address the Rohingya refugee situation.
The crisis, which unfolded in 2017, saw an influx of Rohingyas fleeing persecution and violence in Myanmar, seeking refuge in Bangladesh. Despite the passage of six years since the initial atrocities, the UK remains steadfast in its support for the Rohingyas and the Bangladeshi host communities, who have generously provided shelter and assistance to those in need.
Over the years, the United Kingdom has shown its commitment by providing an impressive £365 million in aid to support the Rohingyas and the local communities hosting them. This substantial financial assistance has played a crucial role in addressing the pressing needs of the displaced Rohingya population and their host communities, including access to shelter, healthcare, food, and education.
Sir Philip Barton's visit to Bangladesh marks the fifth UK-Bangladesh Strategic Dialogue, a testament to the enduring partnership between the two nations. This dialogue builds upon the rich historical ties between the UK and Bangladesh and underscores their shared commitment to forging a contemporary economic, trade, and security partnership.
The United Kingdom's pledge of an additional £3 million in humanitarian support demonstrates its dedication to alleviating the suffering of the Rohingya refugees and reinforcing its cooperation with international organizations to address this ongoing crisis.
This commitment also serves as a testament to the enduring partnership between the UK and Bangladesh, fostering a brighter future for both nations through mutual cooperation and shared goals.
