Bangladesh president calls for durable solution to Myanmar crisis

Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin emphasized the pressing need for a lasting resolution to the ongoing crisis in Myanmar during a statement on Thursday. This crisis has resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees, many of whom have sought refuge in Bangladesh.

President Shahabuddin expressed deep concerns regarding the delays in repatriating the refugees and the shortage of humanitarian assistance, warning that these issues could have broader regional implications.
His remarks were made during the inauguration ceremony of the 18th East Asia Summit held at the Jakarta Convention Centre in the Indonesian capital.
During his address, President Shahabuddin lauded the compassionate actions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who opened Bangladesh's doors to shelter 1.2 million forcibly displaced individuals from Myanmar on humanitarian grounds. However, he lamented the fact that, even after seven years of the crisis, a viable solution remains elusive, and Bangladesh continues to bear a heavy burden.
President Shahabuddin underscored Bangladesh's desire to strengthen its ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and to establish institutionalized relations by becoming a Sectoral Dialogue Partner with ASEAN. This move reflects Bangladesh's commitment to regional cooperation and its aspirations to contribute positively to the ASEAN community.
