Powerful earthquake kills more than 2000 people in Afghanistan

Tragic news emerged from Afghanistan as a series of powerful earthquakes wreaked havoc, resulting in the loss of more than 2000 lives, as reported by Red Crescent spokesman Erfanullah Sharafzoi on Sunday.

According to data from the US Geological Survey (USGS), a sequence of seismic events struck on Saturday, centered approximately 35 kilometers (20 miles) to the northwest of Herat city. The initial quake registered a magnitude of 6.3, leaving destruction in its wake. Subsequently, three significant aftershocks followed, with magnitudes of 6.3, 5.9, and 5.5, accompanied by several smaller tremors.
Hospitals in Herat were inundated with the injured and deceased, with more than 200 fatalities already accounted for, as reported by a Herat health department official who identified himself as Dr. Danish. Tragically, a large portion of the casualties consisted of women and children, while an additional 510 individuals sustained injuries. These numbers are subject to change as rescue and relief efforts continue in the affected areas.
The devastating earthquake has sent shockwaves through Afghanistan, leaving communities in mourning and prompting a coordinated response to provide aid and support to those affected by this natural disaster.
